Murder squad detectives are investigating the death of a pensioner at her house in east London.

The 76-year-old, named locally as Phyllis Nelson, was pronounced dead at the scene in Kent Street, Plaistow, after police were scrambled to the address at about 10.20pm on Thursday.

A man in his thirties was arrested at the scene and is in police custody, Scotland Yard said. It is believed the deceased and arrested man were known to each other.

Today friends and neighbours of Ms Nelson paid tribute to a “matriarch of the community”, and said she had only recently been released from hospital after battling Covid-19.

Zhenreenah Muhxinga told the Standard: “She was a very good friend,  a lovely woman who would do anything for anyone. I’m devastated.”

Police said her next of kin have been informed.

Neighbours said the Ms Nelson had lived with her grandson in the ground floor flat, which was taped off by police officers on Friday morning.

Emma Martin, 32, a data consultant, said “She was an amazing woman, the best neighbour you could ever have. She was the matriarch of the community. She was originally from Jamaica.

“Everybody loved her. She suffered badly from Covid in January and was in hospital for a long time. But she pulled through, her grandson cared for her.”

She added: “She was a wonderful person, she sang in church, tended her garden and was a big part of the community. I am reeling, I’m going to miss her so much.”

A post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said.

A crime scene remains in place and detectives from Specialist Crime are investigating.

Forensics officers are scouring the property for clues and officers are carrying out door to door inquiries.
