A paedophile vicar has been jailed for indecently assaulting a young girl from his south London congregation more than 40 years ago.

Graham Gregory, 79, will spend three years behind bars after finally being brought to justice for his abuse, carried out while he was a curate in a Wandsworth church.

His victim remained silent until 2012, when she contacted police to tell them Gregory had kissed and assaulted her several times in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Gregory was tried on five counts of indecent assault on a girl under 13, and found guilty of two.

Det Const Aaron Vardy from the Met’s sexual offences exploitation and child abuse command today urged any other people abused by the curate to speak out.

He also hailed the woman's bravery in finally coming forward.

"Gregory abused his position as a figure of trust and authority," he said today, following the curate's sentencing on Tuesday.

"It takes a lot of courage to report this type of crime and in some cases victims feel they are only able to come forward years after the offence.

"This conviction highlights that, regardless of how much time has passed, we remain committed to bringing offenders before the courts.

"I would urge anyone else who may have been a victim of Gregory’s abuse to contact with the police."

Gregory, of Brockfield Park Drive, Huntington, has also worked in Hastings, Chichester, York and the Isle of Man as a vicar, and police are appealing for anyone he abused there to contact them.

Anyone who may have been a victim or has any information is asked to contact their local police force on 101.
