Police are investigating a threatening Facebook message sent to a Tory MP showing emojis of a gun and knife.

The message, posted on Thanet South MP Craig Mackinlay's Facebook page, was reported to police today.

The post read: “Another M.p that needs…” immediately followed by images of a knife and gun and a face crying tears of joy.

Kent Police confirmed it is investigating an alleged threat against Mr Mackinlay, who was voted in as MP for the constituency in the 2015 election.

A spokesman said: "Kent Police is investigating a report of a threatening or offensive communication made today.

"Inquiries are ongoing."

Mr Mackinlay was initially a member of Ukip, serving as deputy leader in 1997, before joining the Conservative Party in 2005.
