The sister of one of the schoolgirls mown down by a hit-and-run driver as they walked home from a birthday party in south London has told of her shock.
A 16-year-old girl died and six others were injured when a convertible Audi A3 veered on to the pavement at high speed at a junction near Croydon at 1.25am yesterday.
The driver allegedly fled the scene but later handed himself in to police after an appeal. He was today being questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The incident took place as a group of teenagers were walking home along Pixton Way after attending a birthday party. Local people rushed to help the fatally injured girl, who was found lying face down on the grass.
Today the older sister of a teenager who was hit and injured said the girl who was killed had been awarded a prize by the head teacher at St Philomena’s Catholic High School for Girls in Carshalton two days earlier.
She said: “I don’t understand why it happened, I don’t understand why the driver did it.
“Waking up to the horrible news from my mum and the police wasn’t easy. Neither was telling my old headteacher that one of her students she gave a prize to two days ago has passed.
“We will get through this. I’m still trying to stomach the fact someone hit my little sister.”
