Southampton star Mario Lemina has been hit with a staggering £96,000 speeding fine by magistrates.

The sum is thought to be the biggest handed out for speeding in the UK.

The Premier League player was ordered to pay the costs on Monday by Aldershot magistrates’ court in his absence.

Lemina failed to tell police if he was behind the wheel of his Mercedes-AMG GLA45 after being caught speeding on three separate occasions, the Sun reported.

He said it may have been his brother or cousin, who were staying with him at the time of the offences, who drove, according to the newspaper.

The 25-year-old football ace admitted three counts of failing to notify police after ignoring their letters.

His fine of £96,000 is three times his weekly salary, of £32,000 a week.

The large sum could have risen to £144,000, had he denied the crime.

He also got 18 points on top of the 21 he already had on his non-UK licence, leading to a year’s ban.

The £96,000 fine exceeded the £86,000 one handed to television star Ant McPartlin for drink driving back in April.
