Thrill-seeking drivers in south London are being warned to stop using their local Sainsbury's car park as a race track.

A group of speeding motorists face having their cars seized by police if they continue to cause trouble at the supermarket in Addington Road, Selsdon, police have said.

Shoppers have also complained of hearing hooligans playing loud music from their car stereos.

Five motorists were last week issued with official police warnings in connection with the chaos.

Croydon Police have stepped up patrols in the area in a bid to catch the culprits.

PC Pete Denton, who is leading the investigation, said: "Most of the complaints are about people coming into the car park and playing loud music from the cars and racing their cars up and down the car park.

"This is happening at times when the car park is fairly empty, but its causing a real nuisance to the other car park users, the shop and to local residents who live nearby."

He continued: "We've issued these warnings and we will take action and seize the vehicle of any repeat offenders. We're also looking at other measures and enforcement activity to try and stamp this out."
