We hand out £637,200 to change lives

The Evening Standard's Dispossessed fund has distributed hundreds of thousands of pounds to charities transforming the lives of people across London.

Full details of the £637,200 Dispossessed giveaway to community groups tackling poverty across the capital were today revealed for the first time.

Ninety groups - including a circus troupe for the disabled, a breakfast club for deprived children and a support group for homeless people - will get grants of up to £10,000 each.

Eighty-one of the awards, totalling £592,600, were funded out of the £1 million windfall we received in March from the Big Lottery Fund People Powered Change initiative. The other nine grants totalling £44,600 are being funded by the Dispossessed's permanent endowment fund.

Dharmendra Kanani, England director of the Big Lottery Fund, said: "The projects funded tell an inspiring story of community good. They reveal the power of people and communities to drive change. They also reflect the power of individuals to make things better for those around them - they are the real heroes and heroines of London today."

Geordie Greig, editor of the London Evening Standard, said: "We are proud that our partnership with Big Lottery is having such a dramatic effect to help transform the lives of the most vulnerable people in our capital."

The Dispossessed Fund has now distributed a total of £1.7 million to charitable and community-led projects.
