Ofsted inspectors have praised London’s college teachers for using “every avenue” to help disillusioned young people back into education.

The staff are of high quality, dedicated and highly committed to their students, said the education watchdog in a report after inspectors visited seven colleges to investigate how they attract young people not in education, employment or training (NEETs).

They found that the colleges are succeeding because teachers know their students and are aware of their personal circumstances.

Teachers help develop English and maths skills among the students and forge strong relationships with parents of those with difficulties.

The report said that 4.7 per cent of young Londoners are classed as NEETs, the lowest proportion of all English regions.

Colleges singled out for praise included Barnet and Southgate, Westminster Kingsway and Hackney Community College.
