Two London universities have held their position in the world top ten - and one of them has surpassed Harvard University.

Imperial College London and UCL (University College London) placed third and sixth in this year's QS world university rankings.

Imperial has overtaken Harvard in the annual league table following improvements in research.

It now holds the third place spot jointly with Cambridge, with both institutions scoring 99.4 out of a possible 100.

Ben Sowter, head of research at QS, told the Guardian: "The performance of Imperial in citations per faculty has helped it become the biggest climber in the top 10, leapfrogging Harvard, UCL and Oxford to rank second equal in the world, tied with Cambridge."

Massachusetts Institute of Technology took the crown for the best university in the world for the third year in a row.

King's College London also made the top 20, jumping from 19th to 16th place.

Four British universities made the top six in the world - Cambridge, Imperial, Oxford and UCL.
