A series of mistakes have been found in the proposed new primary school curriculum.

Experts warned there were a number of problems with plans to overhaul what children are taught in school.

The Institute of Physics complained about a sentence that states that the star at the centre of our solar system is “one of millions of stars in the galaxy called the Milky Way”. The Institute said: “There are between 200 and 400 billion stars in the Milky Way.”

The Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education responded to a section that says: “Hindu-Arabic numerals introduced the important concept of zero and place value”, noting that “the origin of zero is not conclusively known”.

The Royal Society of Chemistry, the Society of Biology and the English Association have also raised concerns.

They pointed out areas that need to be corrected in response to the Government’s consultation on the proposed curriculum.

A department for education spokesman said: “We will incorporate any comments on accuracy and hold a full public consultation on the revised drafts before they are finalised.”
