Jeremy Hunt’s favourite hospital has reacted angrily after being ranked in the second-worst category in "patient risk" league tables.

Bosses at the Royal Free in Hampstead said the Care Quality Commission ratings lacked “common sense”.

The hospital was yesterday one of 44 across England said to be at increased risk of providing poor care. This is embarrassing for the Health Secretary as it comes a month after he asked its managers to help turn around the failing Basildon hospital, and as he seeks to appoint the Royal Free’s chairman, Dominic Dodd, to head the foundation trust watchdog, Monitor.

The ratings placed Queen’s in Romford, King George’s in Ilford, Homerton and Croydon in the lowest category.
