An RMT official who defended the Tube strike while pretending to be an ordinary worker faced embarrassment on live radio this morning when his true identity was revealed.

The caller, whose real name is Jared, was speaking on Vanessa Feltz's BBC London Radio show when London Underground boss Nick Brown accused him of being a union official who had taken part in talks over his members' ongoing industrial action.

Jared had given his name as Joe and said he worked on the Underground, with his comments prompting the presenter to remark he seemed "enormously well-informed".

When Mr Brown joined the conversation he said: "Let me just say, Vanessa, that's Jared, he works for the RMT, he's been in over 100 meetings with my colleagues down the months."

The Tube worker then admitted he was in fact an RMT representative who worked as a station supervisor and was occasionally released to undertake union duties.

He claimed the reason he had given a false name was because London Underground bans its employees from making public comments on strike action.

In response, Ms Feltz added: "Consider yourself rumbled."
