Borough Market reopens with poignant show of defiance after terror attack

Fiona Simpson14 June 2017

Borough Market reopened today in a poignant show of defiance as Londoners were told: "This is your market".

Hundreds of traders gathered less than two weeks after terrorists launched a knife and van rampage, leaving eight people dead.

The market fell silent for one minute at 9.30am in honour of those killed and injured in the June 3 atrocity.

Many wept as they linked arms in a show of solidarity following the attack.

Others wore t-shirts emblazoned wit the message 'We Are Family' alongside the Borough Market logo and date of the attack.

The market bell tolled at 10am, hailing the reopening of the buzzing foodie hub.

Chair of trustees, Donald Hyslop said in a moving speech: "London is open, Borough Market is open.

"This is our market. This is your market.

"Thank you for being here today and thank you for bringing the summer sunshine with you."

London Mayor Sadiq Khan looked on as jubilant stall holders hugged and wished each other luck as they sold their wares for the first time since Khuram Butt, Rachid Redouane and Youssef Zaghba ploughed into pedestrians on London Bridge before attacking Saturday night revellers in the market.

Speaking as news broke of a blaze of a west London tower block killing several people, Mr Khan added: "There are mixed feelings at Borough Market today.

"Our thoughts are with those who lost their lives and were injured.

"There are traders who lost business.

"Come to Borough Market, buy their things and support these traders"

Heroes bravely fought off the attackers as they carried out the rampage before being shot dead by armed police.

Spaniard Ignacio Miralles de Imperial, 36, used his skateboard as a weapon as he battled to protect a woman before being knifed to death.

Australian nurse Kirsty Boden, 28, ran towards danger to tend to the injured before being fatally stabbed.

A second Australian, 21-year-old nanny Sara Zelenak was also killed in the attack along with James McMullan, 32, from Hackney and Frenchmen Sebastien Belanger, 36, Xavier Thomas, 45, and Alexandre Pigeard, 27. Canadian Christine Archibald, 30, was the first of the dead to be named.
