A self-taught artist’s depiction of David Bowie completed just before the musician’s death is believed to have had an offer for a staggering £250,000.

Lincoln Townley — whose works usually sell for about £30,000 — had painted the piece as part of a series of depictions of stars, including Al Pacino, Michael Caine and Judi Dench.

The artist, who is married to former Coronation Street and Loose Women star Denise Welch, finished it just before Bowie died last month.

His death sparked a wave of interest in any items connected to Bowie’s long career and a bidding war between art collectors is believed to have seen the painting accumulate the enormous price tag.

Copies of Bowie’s final album Blackstar were selling for more than 10 times their original price, days after his death. Vinyl versions of the LP were on sale for more than £400 as fans scrambled to get their hands on a copy.
