A seven-year-old boy is being treated for serious injuries after being hit by a car in north-east London.

Police said the child was in a serious but stable condition in an east London hospital after the crash near Clapton Common in Hackney on Monday evening.

Witnesses said the boy was left with blood covering his face after the accident at Osbaldeston Road.

A 21-year-old, who saw the aftermath of the incident but did not want to be named, told the Standard: "I heard a witness saying that a child was going over the street so a car stopped to let him go, even though it was a green light, and then another car came past in another lane and hit the child.

"He was conscious but he was taken to hospital. There was lots of police and it was cordoned off."

A spokesman for the Met said: "Police were called to Osbaldeston Road, with the junction of Clapton Common, at approximately 19:25hrs on Monday, 18 May, to reports of a road traffic collision between a car and a child.

"The victim - a seven-year-old boy - was taken to an east London hospital with serious injuries. He is serious but stable."

There have been no arrests and enquiries are continuing, police said.
