Britain First stage second protest in a fortnight outside East London Mosque

Far-right protesters today staged their second demonstration in less than two weeks outside one of London’s largest mosques.

About 15 Britain First members, carrying union jack flags, crosses and a banner, protested outside the East London Mosque at about 1.30pm, staff said.

A handful of demonstrators from the same group had stood in the rain chanting “we want our country back” while young primary school pupils were on a tour of the centre on March 1.

East London Mosque spokesman Salman Farsi told the Standard: “I think they are trying to make up for their poor performance the other day.

“There are big crowds gathering, which are spilling out onto Whitechapel Road.

“The cycle lane is completely blocked, which is dangerous in itself. It’s completely ridiculous.

“It’s the same argument as the other day – they have come to save our souls," Mr Farsi added sarcastically.

Mr Farsi said Christian reverend Alan Green, of The St John on Bethnal Green church, had abandoned a shopping trip in Whitechapel to come and reason with the protestors.

“He has been talking to members of the community, saying that Britain First don't represent Christians,” Mr Farsi added.

“He is challenging them and has denounced them completely.”

Police said officers were called to the demonstration in Whitechapel Road at around 1.30pm and were dealing with the incident. There were no arrests.
