A man has died after collapsing on The Strand, in central London.

Charing Cross Station was temporarily closed as emergency services rushed to reports of a man “taken ill” on The Strand just before 1am on Thursday.

A Met spokesman said: “Officers and London Ambulance Service attended but despite the efforts of the emergency services the man, believed to be aged in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Work is ongoing to identify and inform next of kin.

“At this early stage the death is being treated as unexpected and unexplained.

“A scene remains in place.

“Enquiries into the circumstances continue.”

The Strand reopened to traffic at Trafalgar Square and Bedford Street - either side of Charing Cross station - after being closed at 1am.
