A customer was trapped inside a London high street bank for almost three hours after a technical glitch.

The man became stuck after withdrawing cash from the Uxbridge branch of Metrobank at around 7am on Sunday morning.

The doors locked behind him as he tried to use the bank's out of hours facility which allows customers to enter branches using their cards to access cash machines inside.

An engineer arrived nearly three hours later after Metrobank's customer service opened to allow a passer-by to call for help.

Bystander Sana Khan, 34, told how he called for help after spotting the man inside the branch opposite a coffee shop where he works.

"He tried the handle of the door but it just wouldn't open," he told the Mirror.

"He slid his card through a small gap between the doors but when I tried it, the door still wouldn't open.

"I chatted to him and he seemed perfectly calm and relaxed and, when Metrobank's customer service department opened, I rang them and told them of the problem."

He added: "It was about an hour after that that another member of staff turned up to open up the branch for the day's trading and the man was able to leave."

Metrobank opens seven days a week, and has 25 branches around the country since opening its first outlet in central London in 2010.

A Metrobank spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that a man entered the ATM vestibule at our Uxbridge Store on Sunday.

"Our Customer Services team was contacted when the man had an issue exiting, and sent out an engineer to assist. The man exited at 949am.

"We’re extremely sorry for the inconvenience and are currently investigating the cause of the problem. We have reached out to the man to discuss what happened and apologise.”
