Dagenham shopkeepers urged to help crackdown on acid attacks by putting corrosive liquids behind counter

Shopkeepers are being urged to help the crackdown on acid attacks in east London by putting all corrosive liquids behind the counter.

Darren Rodwell, the leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, has also asked firms to refuse to sell highly acidic products to anybody who “appears young”.

It comes after a spate of attacks on the streets of east London have left many victims with serious burns and, in some cases, life-changing injuries.

Cllr Rodwell said: “We all need to do what we can to make sure we keep acid related products out of young hands.

“We can’t be too safe - we need all responsible traders to work with the police, council and the community. This means not only refusing to sell to anyone who appears young but to put corrosive liquids behind the counter.”

It comes after the council it was looking into evicting convicted acid attackers and their families from council homes.

Cllr Rodwell added: “It’s got to a stage now where we need to look at the rights of the wider community over the rights of individuals and possibly their families, who are involved in outrageous criminal acts such as these evil acid attacks.
