An elderly man has died after being hit by a lorry in central London.

Emergency services were called to Lisson Grove at the junction with Church Street, near Marylebone station, shortly after 11.30am.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said the man, a pedestrian, was hit by a lorry and suffered serious injuries.

Gerard Robinson, owner of Tara Antiques, said: "I was aware of the police presence and they taped off the street outside my shop. I believe someone was going across to the flats and was hit by the truck.

"It is appalling. I drive a car and just think I have to be a lot more careful [to avoid accidents] especially with the amount of cyclists you have now and you have to watch out for.

"It is depressing and tragic. That is the first accident I have been aware of here."

A shopkeeper in Church Street, who did not want to be named, said. "When I was serving a customer, I heard a noise then I saw the traffic was stopped. I heard people shouting.

London Ambulance Service said in a statement: "We sent multiple resources including a duty officer, ambulance crew, fast responder by car and London's Air Ambulance team.
