Gallery: Fashion's wild child Jim Lee swings back into town

Images from London’s “original wild child of fashion photography” have gone on show in the capital.

Somerset House is presenting the work of Jim Lee, 66, whose work captured the mood of the Sixties and Seventies.

He began his career photographing bands including The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Kinks and The Who before switching to fashion.

He worked with Anna Wintour, now Vogue editor-in-chief, early in her career, and collaborated with designers Yves Saint Laurent, Gianni Versace, Alexander McQueen and Ossie Clark.

Born to parents who worked for MI5, at 17 Lee left for Australia, returning to Britain after being sent to the Vietnam war by the Australian army.

He established a strong theatrical style — he called it “a romantic soft-focus frenzy” — and some of his work is in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The Somerset House show coincides with the publication of a book about him by his friend Peter York, former Harpers & Queen style editor.
