In pictures: pets get cosy for Valentine's Day as Battersea animal home stages love-in

It can be one of the most depressing days of the year - either you're left wondering why you're still single or your significant other thinks it's acceptable to palm you off with petrol station flowers.

But to ease everyone's Valentine's Day blues, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home has asked pet owners to send them their best animal couple pictures.

These heart-warming photos show cats and dogs getting very close as they cuddle up together at home.

The animal charity, based in south-west London, asked people to post the images on Twitter and Facebook to promote a Valentine's Day event which aims to re-home some of its cats.

Lindsey Quinlan, head of the cattery, said: "There are plenty of cats looking for love and we hope this is a Valentine’s Day for them to remember."

Feline Lonely takes place at Battersea's cattery this evening from 5.30-9pm.
