The mother of murdered soldier Lee Rigby who was killed last year by Islamist extremists has spoken of her horror at the beheading of James Foley.

Lyn Rigby said she ‘wept’ when she heard news reports of the American journalist’s death at the hands of a jihadist speaking with an English accent.

Mrs Rigby told the Sun on Sunday: "The moment I saw the news about James's beheading, I felt my heart turn over and I just wept."

Her son, Fusilier Rigby, was 25-years-old when he was knocked down by a car near Woolwich Barracks and killed with a meat cleaver in the street.

Michael Adebolajo and fellow extremist Michael Adebowale were this year convicted of his murder.

They had claimed they were "soldiers of Allah" and were motivated by the plight of Muslims abroad to carry out the killing.

Mrs Rigby said she knows the extreme pain felt by the Foley family, given the similarities of the very public nature of her son's killing and that of the US journalist.

She said she cannot rid her mind of "the images of savagery" inflicted on her son, and said she supports calls from Mr Foley's parents John and Diane for people not to watch the fanatics' video which had been circulating online.

She told the Sun: "By refusing to watch, you are making a stand against the terrorists who are trying to push a nasty and violent agenda."
