Weather warnings have been issued for London as the capital is today set to be hit by torrential rain and thunderstorms.

Forecasters have issued a yellow flood warning for London, meaning “persistent and heavy rainfall” is likely, while travel is expected to be disrupted as the weather front bringing the rain hovers over the south east.

A Met Office spokesman said: “The public should be aware of the risk of flooding, including disruption to travel. In addition to this there is the potential for strong winds.”

Today’s grim forecast follows a wet weekend in which parts of Britain saw a fortnight’s rainfall over 24 hours. The Met Office added the weather was caused by an area of low pressure moving through the south of England.

"It is already bringing heavy showers to the south coast from Portsmouth westwards," the spokesman said. "It is heavy rain that will become thundery through the day.

"We could see another 20mm of rain, so for a lot of areas that is a third of a month's rain. There is 40mm to 60mm possible in some places."

The chance of rain is 90 per cent between 9am and 2pm, dropping to 50pc from 4pm.

Temperatures will peak at about 16C in mid-afternoon.

More rain is forecast for the south on Tuesday and Wednesday – but the weather is set to improve in time for the Bank Holiday weekend.
