The London Zoo recently welcomed three critically endangered Asiatic lion pups into the world, and a video from the zoo's "cubcam" showed lioness Arya giving birth and caring for her young.

The litter arrived on March 13 and was born to parents Arya, 7, and Bhanu, 14.

Zookeepers said that they used covert cameras to record Arya's six-hour effort and have tracked the developmental milestones of the three-week-old cubs, including witnessing their first steps, all without interfering with their mother's quality time.

Asiatic lions can now only be found in Gujarat, India's Gir Forest. They are especially susceptible to a disease epidemic or natural calamity because they only have one habitat, according to London Zoo.

The birth of the cubs, according to head big cat keeper Kathryn Sanders, was a "huge boost for the conservation breeding programme".

Sanders revealed: “We are over the moon to be able to share the amazing news that we’ve had three endangered Asiatic lion cubs born at London Zoo. When the wild population is thought to be just 600 to 700 individuals, adding three to that number is a significant increase.

“Arya is proving to be a doting mum to her three cubs, and we’ve been able to observe some heartwarming moments via our hidden cubcam."

The three newborns have only been outside their specially constructed den. After ten days, they opened their eyes, and are now in good health, added the zoo.

After the three cubs have their first immunisations and vet check when they are 10 to 11 weeks old, the zoo has revealed that keepers would confirm their genders.

Ms Sanders said: “We expect that the three-week-old cubs will likely stay inside with mum for a little while yet, although as the weather gets warmer, we might see them venturing outside soon."
