Officers in London responded to more protests near the Iranian Embassy on Monday following the death of a young woman taken into custody by the country’s morality police.

Demonstrators could be seen clashing with police again in footage circulated on social media - after similar scenes on Sunday led to 12 arrests and left several police officers in hospital.

One man was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder on Monday, while a large police presence remained in place near the embassy in Princes Gate, which borders Hyde Park.

Hundreds have gathered there and at other London sites for several days following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody in Iran after being arrested for breaking the country’s hijab laws.

One clip circulated on social media on Monday appeared to show shouting demonstrators throwing a metal barrier at police.

On Monday evening, a Met Police spokesperson said: “Officers continue to respond to demonstrations in the vicinity of the Iranian Embassy in Princes Gate, SW7.

“On the afternoon of Monday, September 26 a number of protesters were involved in disorder.

“One man has been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and taken into custody. A significant policing presence remains the area.”

The Met said the gatherings - at Princes Gate, Marble Arch and at the Islamic Centre of England in Maida Vale - were initially “largely good natured”. But things changed on Sunday when “a significant group” confronted officers and protestors from other groups.

At least five police officers were seriously injured during the clashes on Sunday, which saw 12 people were arrested.
