Police searching for a former EastEnders actress who went missing six days ago have discovered a body in a canal in east London.

Scotland Yard said officers have recovered a woman’s torso which was spotted in the Regent’s Canal in Hackney yesterday.

Friends and relatives of Gemma McCluskie, 29, have mounted a search for her in recent days. Gemma, who appeared in more than 30 episodes of the flagship BBC soap as Kerry Skinner in 2001, vanished from her home in Bethnal Green on Thursday, March 1.

Police sources said the body had not yet been formally identified but there were fears that it was Gemma.

In a statement Scotland Yard said the death was being treated as “unexplained” but police sources said homicide detectives were expected to be called in to investigate the death. Police said yesterday they were “increasingly concerned” for Gemma’s welfare. More than 100 people, including her brother Danny, carried out a search around the area, placing posters in shops and pubs and handing out leaflets on Monday night. Former EastEnders stars Martine McCutcheon and Brooke Kinsella have helped promote the search for Gemma on Twitter.
