Neighbours fear protests as Algerian consulate relocates to residential street

A £7.5 million project to relocate the Algerian consulate from Hyde Park Gate to a residential street in Hammersmith has upset locals, who fear the building will be a magnet for protests.

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has approved the move and council planning permission will be sought.

However, residents in the St Peter’s Square area claim the siting is “wildly inappropriate”.

The proposed consulate would be a base for Algerians to renew passports, apply for visas and register births and marriages.

Planners stress it would have no diplomatic or political functions.

Hammersmith and Fulham council said it had yet to receive the planning permission application.
