Well-wishers have pledged more than £50,000 in less than 24 hours to a fundraising page set up in memory of tragic London Marathon runner David Seath.

The 31-year-old Army captain, a veteran of the Afghanistan conflict, died after suffering a cardiac arrest near the 23-mile mark of the course yesterday.

Following the tragedy, friends of the Green Beret have set up a JustGiving page which on Monday evening smashed through the £50,000 mark - more than 10 times their target amount.

The group of friends and colleagues now plan to "complete what he started" by walking the final three miles of the course for him and continuing to raise money for Help for Heroes, his chosen charity.

Captain James Walker-McClimens of the 7th Parachute Royal Horse Artillery, who set up the fundraising page, said today: "In the Army we don't like unfinished business, it was something he wanted to do.

"He wanted to do the full marathon, so we are going to complete it for him.

"He was raising money for Help For Heroes so we just want to carry on that theme."

The group are also planning a minute's silence during the Army versus Navy rugby match at Twickenham this Saturday, during the 23rd minute.

Earlier today, mother Libby Seath paid tribute to her son, saying: “David has achieved more in 31 years than most people do in 70."
