Police officers came to the rescue of a days-old squirrel after it was found in the middle of the road.

The Hackney officers found the tiny creature abandoned in a street while on patrol.

They rescued the animal – which was less than half the size of the officer’s hand - and returned it to its mum.

Hackney MPS tweeted: “The problem solving team found a lost baby squirrel today, safely reunited with its Mother. Not what you normally find on burglary patrols!”

The officers were applauded for their “caring” actions, with one person writing: “Respect to the thin blue line caring for everything.”

And another tweeted: “My favourite cop story of the day!”
