Room in south east London advertised for £74 per week - but bed is mattress on a desk

This tiny box room advertised for rent in south east London brings a whole new meaning to the phrase 'compact living'.

The extraordinarily small space offers prospective tenants just a mattress on a desk for a bed.

Wires from a broadband box can be seen draped over the end of the mattress.

Those interested in curling up for a snooze in the cubby-hole will pay £74 per week for the privilege, including all bills.

The room, which can be secured by the right tenant for a £200 deposit, is available as part of a six person house share in Lewisham.

In an advert on Spareroom, the landlord states the other flatmates are "easygoing people from Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, and Portugal."

The house is ten minutes walk from Greenwich Park and close to Lewisham shopping centre, she adds.

The advert has sparked criticism from many online commentators.

One Twitter user said: "More evidence that property prices in London are out of control".

Another wrote: "Tory Britain 2014, where £74 a week rents you this tiny room (complete with bare wires)."

Earlier this year, more than 50 people enquired about renting a £780-a-month studio flat in London so small would-be tenants have to climb up above the fridge just to get into bed.

Some suggested the studio flat with a “mezzanine-level bed” in Kentish Town highlighted the shortage of affordable rental accommodation in the capital.
