The Rotherhithe Tunnel is closed in both directions after a driver crashed into the scaffolding early on Friday morning.

Police said they were called to the major river crossing at 1.20am because a driver had crashed into the scaffolding on the tunnel.

The tunnel remained closed nearly ten hours later because the scaffolding needed to be removed following the crash. The car was also being removed.

The driver of the car had left the scene before police arrived.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “The tunnel is closed to traffic while the vehicle and scaffolding are removed.

“Motorists are advised to find alternative routes. There were no reported injuries.”

A picture from the scene shows a silver car and a police car close to the scaffolding.

The closure has caused disruption in the area, with one motorist asking on social media: “Why is Rotherhithe tunnel closed, it was closed at 5am this morning and still closed?”

Another added: “Everyday there’s a problem with [the] Rotherhithe Tunnel.”

The closure of the Rotherhithe Tunnel often causes traffic elsewhere as motorists are forced to use other options such as the Blackwall Tunnel or Tower Bridge to cross the Thames.
