Savoy billionaire could build mile-high skyscraper in London

18 June 2013

TheSaudi billionaire owner of the Savoy Hotel has named London as a possible location to build an “ultimate” mile-high tower.

Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, a nephew of Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah, has invited London and other global cities to put forward proposals for tax breaks and government support for a skyscraper that would be easily the world’s tallest building.

The Prince told Reuters news agency: “I am now inviting the major cities of the world like Shanghai, Moscow, New York, London and regional cities in the Middle East to come and give their offers.”

Any such plan is likely to face insurmountable objections from London planners and politicians as well as wreak havoc with air traffic control. It would be five times the height of London’s tallest building, the 309-metre-high Shard at London Bridge. The world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, is 828-metre high.
