The Mayor has paid tribute to his former deputy Sir Simon Milton as the “personification of calm, sweet reason” as he unveiled a stone bust in his memory.

At the ceremony in Piccadilly, Boris Johnson said his legacy was as “one of the most gifted public administrators of his generation”.

Sir Simon, 49, died of pneumonia in April 2011 after a 20-year battle with leukaemia. He was leader of Westminster council between 2000 and 2008, when he became chief-of-staff at City Hall and deputy mayor in charge of planning.

The bust, by Alan Micklethwaite, will form part of the Crown Estate development, One Eagle Place. Sir Simon lived on the site and the flagship of his family’s chain of shops, Sharaton’s patisseries, was nearby.
