A stag on the loose in Croydon has forced council bosses to close a park.

The Red deer stag, one of the largest of its species, was photographed roaming in Park Hill Park earlier today by novelist Daniel Webster, who tweeted: "Face to face with large Red Deer in Parkhill this morning. Didn't expect to see that... #Croydon."

A council spokesman said: “As a precaution we have closed Park Hill Park to the public and our park rangers are working to safely relocate the deer.”

The sighting caused excitement on Twitter with @LizSheppardJone tweeting: "@GreenPeterU @ParkHillFriends a rampant stag! Surely Croydon already has plenty?"
