In between the vital work the Met's helicopter crews do keeping the capital safe, they also find the time to take some of the most awe-inspiring pictures of London imaginable.

This collection shows some of the best images tweeted by the @MPSinthesky account in 2014.

It includes runners snaking through the capital's streets during the London Marathon, stunning sunsets and ominous clouds formations.

The pictures capture unrivalled views of some of the biggest stories and events of the year.

For instance, the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red World War One tribute at the Tower of London was perhaps even more powerful when seen from high above.

The helicopter captured sporting contests as they raged on the ground during cricket test matches, tennis tournaments and football games.

And the pictures prove yet again the wealth of architecture in the capital - from the majestic dome of St Paul's, to the glistening glass of the Shard.
