Pub grub: The Andover Arms in Hammersmith

A west London pub has been voted the second best restaurant in the capital - ahead of some of the city's most famous Michelin starred eateries.

The Andover Arms in Hammersmith is currently beating Michel Roux Junior's Le Gavroche and Gordon Ramsay's Restaurant in TripAdvisor's online rankings.

The website invites customers to mark establishments out of five based on their food, service, value for money and general atmosphere.

The pub has achieved a maximum average score of five from about 300 reviews - with the vast majority of people judging it as "excellent".

Top dinner: fish and chips

One diner wrote recently: "Amazing service, amazing food, great prices. London is very much hit and miss for me and this was a very big hit. Do not be put off by the suburban surroundings, it is worth the Tube ride and walk."

Another said: "Book in advance and you're in for a treat. Lovely welcome the moment you step through the door. I had a delicious tender cooked to perfection steak and my friend had the lamb - happy smiles and empty plates. Sadly too full for puddings. We will be back many times I hope - we loved this pub."

General manager Victoria de Polo, who took over the running of the pub in December, said many of the restaurant's new customers were foreigners.

She said she was "surprised" by the pub's increasing popularity.

Special dish: rosemary and garlic roasted lamb with sautéed seasonal vegetables

She said: "We were not expecting it. We are just a local community pub in the back streets of Hammersmith. We call ourselves London's hidden gem. Some people in London don't even know we exist."

She continued: "It is really a rolling ball with TripAdvisor - sometimes it goes uphill and downhill. But we knew something was happening at the beginning of the year because we were getting more and more foreigners."

Highlights on the menu, which offers customers the chance to dine from as little as £8 per head, include; homemade pies, beer battered fish and chips and rosemary and garlic roasted lamb with sautéed seasonal vegetables.

Ms de Polo said: "It is just pub grub - everything is made from scratch. It is really good English home cooked food."

Head Chef Chintan Patel said: “I am happily surprised that pub food is still recognized and appreciated in today’s culinary world and very proud of our position on Tripadvisor.”
