Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg performed their final duties as party leaders today as they took part in a VE Day memorial service in central London.

The politicians, who resigned as leaders of their respective parties today after suffering defeat in the general election, joined David Cameron and a triumphant Nicola Sturgeon to lay wreaths at the Cenotaph in Whitehall.

The party leaders put their differences aside as The Duke of York led the wreath-laying followed by a two minute silence.

VE — Victory in Europe — Day, on 8 May 1945, marked the acceptance by the Allies of Germany’s unconditional surrender, and the final end to the ordeal of Luftwaffe bombing endured by Londoners through much of the war.

It also marks 70 years since Winston Churchill announced the war with Germany had ended.

A thanksgiving service is taking place at Westminster Abbey on Sunday, while more than 200 beacons will be lit around the UK to mark the occasion.

After the service veterans and serving members of the armed forces will parade through London and past the Treasury balcony where Churchill delivered his address.

There will also be East End parties, and Trafalgar Square will be floodlit in the same way it was 70 years ago — with huge V-shaped lights.
