Wanstead High Street crash: Pensioner dies after being hit by car at zebra crossing

A pensioner has died after being hit by a car at a zebra crossing in a busy shopping street.

Emergency services were called to Wanstead High Street around 8.55am this morning to reports of a pedestrian being hit by a car.

The man, believed to be in his 90s was taken to an east London hospital in a critical condition with severe head injuries.

He then died in hospital just after 1pm. His next of kin have been informed.

A Met Police spokesman confirmed that the driver stopped at the scene and there have been no arrests.

Wanstead High Street remained cordoned off between Woodbine Place and Grove Park while investigations were undertaken this afternoon.
