Warm welcome for car park baby born in the snow

A mother gave birth in a hospital car park when her baby arrived before she could reach the ward.

Yuhan Tsai was driven to St Helier Hospital in Carshalton by her husband Kayuen after going into labour. But the couple, from Sutton, were still in the car when the baby girl’s head appeared.

Mr Tsai ran inside and two senior midwives, an obstetrician, an A&E consultant and a porter came to help in the snow-covered car park.

Midwife Michelle Whitfield said: “With great team work and a rapid response, Yuhan and her baby were kept safe and warm.”

Mrs Tsai said: “Afterwards, I felt quite relaxed about it.” The couple named their 7.5lb baby Mukei Choi. Her brother Danche is two.
