'We'll get people cycling to Heathrow, says Hounslow'

12 August 2013

Air passengers would cycle to Heathrow under plans put forward by a London borough bidding to turn itself into a “mini-Holland”.

Hounslow council believes the 11,000 airport workers in the borough and people heading off on city breaks with just a rucksack for luggage can be encouraged to ride their bikes to the airport if it secures funding for new “Skycle” routes and secure bike parking.

It is bidding for a share of £100 million from Transport for London in a scheme which will enable up to four boroughs to adopt Dutch-style safer cycling measures. The winners are due to be announced later this year.
