Christmas shoppers had to leave a branch of Marks & Spencer in Westfield this afternoon after the fire alarm was set off by mistake.

Customers fled the shopping centre after the fire alarm sounded at about 1.20pm on Monday.

A spokeswoman for Westfield said the alert was a false alarm, after the fire alarm was pressed in error.

Shoppers had to wait outside for about 10 minutes before the store reopened.

Francesca Hose tweeted as the evacuation was in progress, saying: "M&S at Westfield has been evacuated.

"It's the only shop I really needed to go to. Should've gone online."

Earlier she had tweeted: "Going to Westfield four days before Christmas. What could possibly go wrong?"

She told the Standard: "I was just about to wander in when the alarm sounded.

"It reopened around 10 minutes later."
