Westminster Bridge Road closed as spectacular burst water main causes rush hour disruption

A spectacular spurt of water was sent skywards as a burst main cause rush hour delays.

An enormous jet of water could be seen towering above cars on Westminster Bridge Road, near Waterloo station, at 7am on Thursday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene between Lower Marsh and Baylis Road as water cascaded down the tarmac.

Transport for London warned that the road would be closed while workers attempted to stem the flow of water and repair the main.

At least six bus routes were placed on diversion as thousands of Londoners made their way to work. They included routes 12, 53, 148,159, 453 and C10.

Social media users hailed the burst main as the capital's latest water feature, with one likening it to Geneva’s iconic Jet d’Eau.
