Women who have died at the hands of men are being commemorated this week to raise awareness of their struggle.
The names of those killed since the beginning of the year were posted on Twitter yesterday to mark the United Nations’ international day for the elimination of violence against women.
The tweets began at 6am and continued every 10 minutes until midnight, to remember the 116 known victims.
Karen Ingala Smith, chief executive of charity Nia, which organised the event and works to end violence against women and children, said: “Men’s violence against women crosses boundaries of culture and country. We are united by men’s violence against women as a cause and consequence of inequality.”
According to the charity, more than a third of women worldwide will experience physical or sexual violence.
So far this year, it has counted 116 victims in the UK — 19 in London — compared with 120 last year.
In London, in the year to October, 3,582 rapes were reported to the police, an increase of 14.8 per cent on the previous year.
In addition, 51,169 domestic crimes were reported, an increase of 6.1 per cent.
