England win! On penalties!

It’s been almost a quarter of a century since England’s penalty-induced exit from the 1990 World Cup in Italy, but the memory still breaks fans’ hearts.

While most of us hope there won’t be a repeat performance in Brazil, actor Sam Riley mischievously staged his own.

At his wedding to German actress Alexandra Maria Lara, he hosted “a penalty shoot-out with the English and German guests. I thought it might break the ice,” he tells Esquire.

“The photos are hilarious because, on one side, there’s all the German guests laughing and enjoying it and then there’s the English looking like it’s happening all over again. But we did ’em. I think a whisper must have gone round that if they were going to have a good party they should let us win.”
