A hushed antiquarian bookshop isn’t where you’d expect to stumble across a Hollywood star but James Franco made a surprise appearance at Sotheran’s on Sackville Street last night for the launch of Maryam Sachs’s new novel, The Passenger.

Franco, in town filming the thriller Good People, says he’s a big fan of London. “I studied here one summer when I was at UCLA,” he said. The Californian university is one on a long list of academic institutions the actor has had flings with. He is currently studying for two PhDs, at Yale and Houston.

Would he consider enrolling here? “No,” he laughed. “I think I’m doing enough studying.”
