Mrs Thatcher was often seen as a difficult backseat driver for John Major. But the former Prime Minister seems to be having great fun now that he’s the one who can make pointed comments from the sidelines.

Last year Major heavily implied that David Cameron needs to change his attitude towards the the EU, arguing that Britain should negotiate “with the grain of evolving views” in Europe. Now, speaking on yesterday’s BBC Radio 4 programme Reflections, he’s come out in support of immigrants, veering away from the usual Tory line by describing them as “people with guts and the drive to travel halfway across the world in many cases to better themselves and their families.”

“I think that’s a very Conservative instinct,” added Major, who knows the best time to give a provocative interview is when the poor PM is trying to have his holiday.
