Londoner's Diary: Eton's old boys before they were famous

In today's Diary: Spot the famous faces of the future in new Eton schoolmaster biography
Guess Who?: a fresh-faced David Cameron
15 June 2017

How's this for a motley crew? This week The Londoner was at Christie’s for the launch of The Enigma of Kidson, Jamie Blackett’s biography of much-loved Eton schoolmaster Michael Kidson, who passed away last year. We picked up a copy and went straight to the pictures, only to be greeted by some famous faces.

Who’s that foppy youth leaning against a country gate, above? Yep, David Cameron, future Prime Minister. His photo, sent to Kidson as a parting gift, comes with a note: “I know you think that I know less history than you, but all the same I greatly enjoyed being taught by you for the two years,” Cameron wrote. “As you once said, I fear the Oxbridge dons.”

The gift keeps on giving. Tom Parker Bowles lies nonchalantly on a rooftop. A fresh-faced Dominic West — future star of stage and screen — beams in an ensemble adorned with beermats. Justin Welby displays an impressive head of hair, and Jacob Rees-Mogg, well, looks much the same, actually.

No sign of a teenage Boris though — he was in a different house. If anyone has any snaps, do send them in, and scroll down to find Welby, Parker Bowles, Rees-Mogg and West in their bygone days.
