With ungallant haste, novelist Salman Rushdie rushed to deny implications that he and his old friend Nigella Lawson are romantically involved.

“Life in the tabloids: so strange. 2 people, friends for 30 years, get a bite to eat. Hot gossip! Hold the front page!” he tweeted yesterday, along with a link to a news story on his and Lawson’s evening jaunt at Fischer’s in Marylebone. Rushdie used to be married to Padma Lakshmi, who also wrote cookbooks, but that’s not to say he needs another.

Still, The Londoner would like to gently point out to Mr Rushdie that the best way of defuelling a rumour is not necessarily to tweet it to one’s three-quarters of a million followers.
