Mayfair club owner Robin Birley has always been a staunch backer of the Republicans. He was an enthusiastic supporter of George W Bush, holding parties on Presidential election night at Annabel’s in Berkeley Square to celebrate his victories.
So last night, Birley’s first US election night at his new club, 5 Hertford Street, was a bit of a fizzer. He was hosting a private dinner for Robert Agostinelli, billionaire private equity hedge fund manager and Romney supporter.
The invitation described it as “a sit-down dinner and it will go on all night until we win”.
Perhaps they’ll have to carry on for another four years now.
